2016: vancouver, british columbia
I left work early on Thursday October 20 and walked to Union Station in Portland to catch the Amtrak north the Vancouver, BC, my first time visiting Canada. On the train, I met Tim Davis and the two young men he was accompanying visiting from South Carolina, as well as Natalia visiting from Florida. I was picked up from the train station by Leanne, whom I’d met the month prior when she was seeing her friend Francesca in Mu play a show at Crush House.
The next day, we walked around and explored Vancouver, which I found to be a delightful city. We went to a going-away party for somebody I didn’t know (was it Mark who was going away? I don’t know! but I met Mark there), and then to a dance party held in an office space, where I met Morgan and Andrea Wheeler.
We started Saturday with brunch with Theodor and others whose names I’ve lost to the years. I spent my afternoon roaming the streets of Vancouver, smoking weed and buying jeans, having an absolutely lovely time. Leanne picked me up and we went to a Harvest Social at Sunday Cider where we met up with Francesca, then went to a friend’s house for dinner.
Saturday evening, we went to Red Gate Arts Society to see a couple of bands play, whose names I didn’t know now and have yet to figure out now. I met Lauren, whose photo I took became her LinkedIn photo for years following, and ran into Morgan from the day before. Katayoon tended bar (not pictured).
For my last day in town, we chilled around at the house we’d been to the night before, then went to The Sunday Service Presents: Deep Fry Sunday, an improv show at the Fox Cabaret. It was my first (and as of 2024 my only) improv show; it was okay. I wasn’t able to take pictures. I returned to Portland on the train the next morning!
