Dead Moon
Dead Moon was a band featuring Fred Cole, Toody Cole, and Andrew Loomis. I didn’t discover Dead Moon’s music until after the band had disbanded, so I never had the chance to actually see the original line-up live. However, I had the opportunity to see Pierced Arrows, Fred and Toody’s next band with Kelly Halliburton as drummer, in 2010 in the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. At 62 years old, Fred rocked harder than I’d ever seen anybody rock before; I was hooked. When I moved back to Portland a few years later, I saw them play a couple of shows at the Crystal Ballroom as Dead Moon, with Kelly as drummer (although I only took photos the second time). In one of the photos, you can see Fred’s arm wrapped around Tres Shannon of Voodoo Donuts, for whom they sang happy birthday.
On October 5 2017, the City of Portland honored Dead Moon with an official designation of the date as Dead Moon Night.
The iconic Dead Moon logo has also appeared on many T-shirts.
